Half-day course profile
9:30 Introduction to Communication theory:
Communicating with people who are like us is relatively simple, the difficulty arises in communicating with all kinds of different types of people. This is because if we are similar people, we can predict our behaviours and this makes us feel safe and more receptive.
9:45 Active listening:
This is so important because inactive listening is the major cause of most misunderstandings and it’s such a problem that psychologists have identified 3 types on non-listening.
-
Cosmetic listening - Pretending to listen while thoughts wander
-
Selective listening - Only listening to things that interest us
-
Ambushing - listening for inconsistencies to catch others out!
10:15 The Social Styles:
Model of the 4 types of individuals and how to communicate more effectively with: Drivers, Analyticals, Amiables, and Expressives.
10:45 Tea and coffee break
11:00 The 3 primary communication channels:
Different people use these in different ways and they give away their primary mode by the metaphors they use. By matching their style, you’ll have a better chance of a more effective dialogue.
-
Visual - sight - “Looks good, I see, show me, I get the picture”
-
Auditory - sound - “Sounds good, I hear you, tell me, rings a bell”
-
Kinaesthetic - touch - “Feels good, I’m comfortable with it, touch base”
11:30 Non-verbal communication:
Research suggests that at least 50% of our overall communication is transmitted in the form of non-verbal signals; posture, gestures, eye movements, and non-word sounds like “mmmm, ahhhhh, uh-uh, errrr” There are 4 aspects to non-verbal communication:
-
Proxemics - Horizontal and vertical distances
-
Kinesics - Facial expressions, gestures and movements
-
Autonomics - flushing, blanching, gulping, blinking
-
Paralanguage - Voice tone, volume, rhythm, emphasis
Attendees will learn how to read others’ body language and to manage their own non-verbal signals to communicate more effectively with all types of people.
