When conducted properly, an appraisal system is probably one of the most powerful performance management tools available. It originated as the Merchant Navy developed and needed to formalise performance ratings: Good conduct, Satisfactory conduct, and DTC (Decline to comment).

10:00 Preparing for appraisal as both appraiser and appraisee:
Collating relevant information, statistics, putting together an appraisal portfolio (‘Brag file’). Questions for both parties to consider: Does this person perform well? Does he/she keep up to date? Does he/she work well in a team? What are his/her development needs?

12:00 During the appraisal interview:
Setting the scene and developing rapport, reviewing performance and acknowledging achievement. Identifying areas for development and agree a course of action. Setting 3-6 objectives for the next year and joint signatory of appraisal documentation.
